Boxer Micky Ward retracted his endorsement of Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown over his opposition to gay marriage and unions.

The 46-year-old Ward, the subject of the 2010 film The Fighter starring Mark Wahlberg, confirmed to the Sun of Lowell his pending endorsement of Brown after the Brown campaign hinted of Ward's backing.

But 30 minutes later, Ward reversed himself, calling the paper to inform staffers that he could not support Brown's re-election.

“I found out Scott is anti-union, and I'm a Teamster guy,” Ward told the paper. “I found out he's also against gay marriage, and I say if you love someone, you should have the same rights no matter who you are.”

As a Massachusetts state senator, Brown vocally opposed the 2003 state Supreme Court ruling which legalized marriage equality in the state. Since that time, Brown has said he opposes a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as a heterosexual union and believes marriage equality is “settled law” in Massachusetts.
