One Million Moms is calling on its
members to forgo shopping at Amazon.com after its CEO Jeff Bezos and
his wife MacKenzie gave $2.5 million in support of Referendum 74, the
Washington state ballot question which would uphold the state's gay
marriage law.
The law was set to take effect in June
but was put on hold when opponents turned in more than twice the
number of signatures needed to put it up to a public vote in
November.
One Million Moms, which has close ties
to the Christian conservative group American Family Association
(AFA), is the organization which made national headlines earlier this
year when it called on JCPenney to fire comedian Ellen DeGeneres as
the department store's spokesperson because she's openly gay.
“So long Amazon,” the group
tweeted.
One commenter on Facebook questioned
the group's logic.
“To boycott AMAZON is over the top,”
Tamra Bowman-Thein wrote. “OMM is eventually going to run out of
places to Eat, Shop, Work, etc … this was a personal donation. …
This one just doesn't make a lick of sense.”
