National retailer Target Corp. is
selling a line of t-shirts geared toward Gay Pride.
The shirts are already selling on
Target's website. One shirt includes a graphic of a pair of
rainbow-colored sunglasses. Another crew shirt, part of Gwen
Stefani's clothing line Harajuku Mini, includes a rainbow along with
the words “Love is Love” in a comment bubble. All
4 styles cost $12.99 each. Up to $12,000 from the sale of the
shirts will be donated to the Washington D.C.-based Family Equality
Council, which supports gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
families.
The move comes two years after Target
became the target of a boycott over its $150,000 donation to MN
Forward, a political action group that backed gay marriage foe Tom
Emmer's gubernatorial bid.
“I certainly recognize what an
incredible reaction [the Emmer-related donation] generated,”
Jennifer Chrisler, the council's executive director, told the Star
Tribune. “But here's what I know about Target and their
work with us: They're 100 percent committed to the goal of families
being respected in all communities, including parents who happen to
be LGBT. This is a continuation of that support.”
Target has not offered a statement on
where it stands on a proposed constitutional amendment which if
approved in November would ban gay marriage in Minnesota.
