Jon Stewart has mocked New Jersey
Governor Chris Christie's recent veto of a gay marriage bill approved
by lawmakers.
During Tuesday's episode of Comedy
Central's The Daily Show, Steward told his audience that he
was proud that his home state had passed marriage equality.
“I was very proud last Friday to say
that the state Legislature, the state where I grew up, voted to
legalize gay marriage,” he said to rousing applause.
“Unfortunately, like most events in
New Jersey, it was immediately thrown off course by a loud Italian
guy.”
In a nod to The
Real Housewives of New Jersey, Stewart joked with a
stereotypical Jersey accent: “In New Jersey, we believe marriage
should be as it always was intended, between one indicted,
orange-faced man and a woman with high bangs and dead eyes.”
Stewart observed that Christie's
position was surprising given he lives openly as an obese American
and wondered what Christie's position would be if the debate was over
“fat” marriage before playing a clip of millionaire mogul Donald
Trump discussing “fat marriage.”
“New York is a place with lots of
'fats' and I think it's great,” Trump said in the doctored clip.
“But I'm not in favor of 'fat' marriage.”
“I mean honestly, it makes as much
sense as stopping gay marriage,” Stewart added. “So, get over it
Christie.”
