Which gays were googled the most in 2011? According to gay glossy The Advocate, they are singers Ricky Martin and Elton John.

Martin, who turned 40 on Saturday, squeaked by Sir Elton for the coveted top spot of the most searched-for openly gay personality on Google.

The Livin' la Vida Loca singer came out gay last year in his memoir Me. Last month, the Spanish government announced that it had granted citizenship to the Puerto Rican singer, ostensibly so he could marry boyfriend Carlos Gonzalez, though Martin has not announced any plans.

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton dropped from last year's first place finish to become the third most googled gay of the year.

Fashion designer Marc Jacobs ranks fourth on the list, just ahead of fifth place finisher Adam Lambert.

Rounding out the top ten are: television host Ellen DeGeneres (6), singer George Michael (7) actor Neil Patrick Harris (8), fashion designer Alexander McQueen (9) and gay rights activist Dan Choi (10).

Glee co-stars Jane Lynch (16) and Chris Colfer (14) also rank in the top 20. Recently out actor Zachary Quinto is the 20th most googled gay of 2011.
