Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black has weighed in on Tracy Morgan's anti-gay comedy routine.

In a routine delivered last weekend in Nashville, Morgan, the star of NBC's 30 Rock, condoned anti-gay bullying and said he would stab his son to death if he found out he was gay.

Black, who won an Oscar for penning Milk and is openly gay, talked to Greg Hernandez about the controversy.

“He’s apologized at this point,” said Black. “You know, these things are learning experiences. I think as long as we react strongly and let them know that it is not appropriate and that they do apologize that we are using it as learning experiences. We’re saying, 'Hey, you can’t do this and this is why.' If the apology happens, I think it’s good. It’s helpful.”

Other openly gay celebrities, including George Takei, Cheyenne Jackson and Wanda Sykes, harshly criticized Morgan.

However, fellow comic Chris Rock came to Morgan's defense, suggesting he had a right to say outrageous things.

Morgan apologized for his comedy set on Friday, but gay rights groups said they hoped he would do more.
