Openly gay The Vampire Diaries producer Kevin Williamson says he yearns to bring a gay character to Mystic Falls, Syfy reported.
Speaking to reporters last week at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, Williamson said he's considering a gay character for his teenage drama based on the L. J. Smith book of the same name.
“I don't want it to be a character that comes in and is a one-off,” he said. “I want someone to come in and have a reason and a purpose and really push that story forward the way I want to do it, and they're so important to the story that without them the show won't happen. That's what I want.”
Upon elaboration, Williamson said he would prefer to bring in a new character, and dismissed a coming out story, especially for Michael Trevino's character of Tyler, the werewolf.
“The werewolf story is an allegory on its own for any coming out story,” he said. “It's a universal coming out story.”
“I want it to be a good story,” he added. “As soon as we can, we will.”
The Vampire Diaries returns to the CW for its second season on September 9.
