Toronto police say a man was killed during an altercation Sunday after his assaulters ran him over with a black SUV.

Gay weekly Xtra reported the man, Christopher Skinner, was gay.

In a statement released on Monday, officials say police officers responded to a call for a pedestrian struck on Sunday, October 18. The call came in at 3:05AM.

An altercation erupted between at least two men driving a black SUV and Skinner as he walked home alone along Adelaide Street. The men attacked the 27-year-old and knocked him to the ground, then returned to the vehicle and the driver ran over Skinner, police say.

He was rushed to the hospital, but died while in surgery. Police have classified the crime as a homicide.
