Transgender actress Laverne Cox wrote an inspiring Instagram post to help kick off Transgender Awareness Week.

Cox is best known for playing Sophia Burset, a transgender woman incarcerated in a women's minimum security prison, on the Netflix dramedy Orange is the New Black.

“Today kicks off Trans Awareness Week,” Cox wrote. “In the past week I have heard from so many trans folks who have expressed that being who they are in America is about to become way more difficult. That [may be] true but what I know for sure is that even in the face of violence and discrimination once I chose to live the truth of my black trans womanhood there was no turning back.”

“The journey has been rough and I wouldn't have it any other way. The future is uncertain but it always is no matter who is in office. All we have is the present moment,” she concluded.

Transgender Awareness Week is a two-week celebration leading up to the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), the day, November 20, set aside to remember the victims of transphobia.
