The U.S. Navy is expected to name a ship after Harvey Milk.
The U.S. Naval Institute News reported that U.S Navy Secretary Ray Mabus earlier this month signed a notification that he intends to name a fleet oiler the USNS Harvey Milk.
Milk was the first openly gay elected official of a major U.S. City. He was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977 on a pledge to back gay and lesbian rights. The following year, Milk was killed by Dan White, a former supervisor.
The ship has yet to be built, a process that could take years.
Milk served in the Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Kittiwake, a submarine rescue ship.
Two years ago, a U.S. postage stamp was dedicated to the memory of Milk. In May, Salt Lake City renamed a street after the civil rights leader.
