Director J. J. Abrams has promised that future installments of Star Wars will include gay characters.

“Of course!” Abrams answered when asked by The Daily Beast.

“When I talk about inclusivity it's not excluding gay characters,” he said. “It's about inclusivity. So of course.”

Abrams, who directed, co-produced and co-wrote Star Wars: The Force Awakens, added: “I would love it. To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn't be a homosexual character in that world.”

Of course, actor Oscar Isaac has hinted at a potential romance between his character, resistance pilot Poe Dameron, and co-star John Boyega's ex-stormtrooper Finn.

I think it's [a] very subtle romance that's happening,” Isaac told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres last month.
