Gavin MacIntosh, half of the youngest same-sex kiss in television history, told gay glossy Out last week that playing gay on ABC Family's The Fosters has been “great.”

The drama revolves around a lesbian couple who are coping with raising five children, including the addition of a wayward teenage girl.

Jude (played by 15-year-old Hayden Byerly) is the youngest son in the family at 13. Connor (MacIntosh) came to Jude's rescue when he was being bullied. In an episode broadcast in March, Jude confronted Connor about their relationship and Connor responded by kissing Jude.

“It really has been great,” MacIntosh told Out of working on The Fosters. “Honestly, four or five years ago, when I began acting, I would never have expected to be playing a gay character or to be here talking about this. The whole journey has been incredible, and it's opened my eyes to so many things and [made me] aware of issues the world [is] facing now.”

“My family supported it, and I would have had a tough time if they didn't support it. I'm lucky enough to have parents that do support me.”

Of the controversy the kiss whipped up, MacIntosh remarked, “We still have a lot of work to do.”
