Appearing Thursday on the Tonight Show, Irish actor Colin Farrell applauded passage of a referendum on same-sex marriage in Ireland, which made it the first country to legalize such unions through a popular vote.

Farrell had endorsed the referendum in an op-ed where he spoke of the distance his brother Eamon had to travel to marry his husband.

During his Tonight Show appearance, Farrell mocked the Roman Catholic Church's response to the referendum.

“You know, God bless them, the Catholic Church said, 'It's a dark day for the people of Ireland.' You look at all the footage and it's just rainbows everywhere. Everyone's dancing,” Farrell said.

“Oh, people were going crazy,” host Jimmy Fallon said.

“I mean, it was an amazing day. Old and young alike, the whole country came together in a massive gesture of love,” he added.
