Taye Diggs is preparing to bring “a little chocolate” to Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway as the show's first African-American lead.

Hedwig tells the story of a transgender rock musician's search for “my other half.”

Darren Criss, who is best known for playing gay student Blaine Anderson on the Fox musical-comedy Glee, will end his 12-week engagement next month. Diggs will debut as Hedwig on July 22.

“I'm going to bring a little chocolate to it – mix it up,” Diggs said Monday during an appearance on HuffPost Live.

“In my experience, Broadway is far more liberal and a lot less concerned with race,” he said. “I think, because there are a lesser amount of people going to the theater as opposed to moviegoers, producers in theater have the luxury of doing what they want, because they don't have to worry about the mass audiences.”

“I think theatergoers themselves are a little bit more liberal than your average moviegoer,” Diggs added.
