A Midland, Michigan mother says a pastor who recently resigned after he was caught looking for sex on Grindr told her gay son that he's going to hell.

Gay blog Queerty on Monday published screenshots of Matthew Makela, an associate pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church and School in Midland, soliciting sex from another man on Grindr, a dating app for gay and bisexual men. Makela, a husband and father of five, has since resigned from his post.

Jennifer Kish told WNEM that Makela told her then 17-year-old son Tyler that he was going to hell because he's gay. The message left Tyler depressed and considering suicide.

“If he's going to hell for being gay, then he might as well go to hell by committing suicide,” Kish said.

Queerty said it outed the pastor because of his opposition to gay rights.
