Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed on Monday suspended Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran for self-publishing a book that describes gays as “unclean.”

Saying he was “disappointed” to learn about the book, Reed suspended Cochran for a month without pay.

“I profoundly disagree with and am deeply disturbed by the sentiments expressed in the paperback regarding the LGBT community,” said Reed, who two years ago endorsed marriage equality. “I will not tolerate discrimination of any kind within my administration.”

The book, titled Who Told You That You Were Naked, is being sold at Amazon.com and BanesAndNoble.com. In one passage, Cochran describes being gay as a “perversion.”: “Uncleanness – whatever is opposite of purity; including sodomy, homosexuality, lesbianism, pederasty, bestiality, all other forms of sexual perversion.”

“Naked men refuse to give in, so they pursue sexual fulfillment through multiple partners, with the opposite sex, the same sex and sex outside of marriage and many other vile, vulgar and inappropriate ways which defile their body-temple and dishonor God,” he writes elsewhere in the book.

The GA Voice reported that Cochran's author page identifies him as a “devout Christian man” whose “greatest desire is to fulfill the purpose of God for his life.”

Out city councilmember Alex Wan told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the mayor should investigate whether LGBT employees have been affected by Cochran's views.
