In what police have described as “a robbery gone bad,” a transgender woman was fatally shot in the head in the Los Angeles neighborhood of East Hollywood.

The victim, 47, is seen in video captured by a surveillance camera walking along the 600 block of North Kenmore Avenue around 2:30 AM Thursday morning when she is approached by three men in their 20s. An altercation between the men, described by police as Hispanic, and the woman ensues in which they unsuccessfully attempt to overpower her and steal her purse. One of the men pursues her and shoots her in the head as she crosses the street.

The woman was pronounced dead around 5 AM at Los Angles County-USC Medical Center.

“From what we've been told by witnesses, it appears … that it may be a robbery gone bad,” said police Lt. Joe Losorelli.

The woman will be remembered at a vigil to be held at the scene of the crime Friday night.

KTLA News 5 noted that police initially described the victim as a transgender woman but an LAPD detective described the deceased person as a transgender man.
