Neil Patrick Harris' interpretation of a transgender rock star in the Broadway musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch has earned him a Best Actor in a Musical Tony Award nomination.
Hedwig, which had a long off-Broadway run at New York City's Jane Street Theater and was later turned into a movie in 2001 starring John Cameron Mitchell in the title role, tells the story of a transgender rock musician's search for “my other half.”
The 40-year-old Harris debuted in the play last week.
Competing in the category against Harris are Ramin Karimloo (Les Miserables), Andy Karl (Rocky), Jefferson Mays (A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder) and Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder).
Hedwig was nominated in the Best Revival of a Musical category.
