Actress Kerry Washington says she is not offended by rumors she is gay.

The 36-year-old star of the ABC drama Scandal married NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha in June. On Thursday, it was announced that Washington is pregnant with the couple's first child.

However, Washington is notoriously private about her love life, which has led to speculation about her sexual orientation.

In an interview with gay glossy The Advocate conducted before Washington revealed she is pregnant, the Emmy-winning actress said that the lesbian rumors don't bother her.

“It's interesting how much people long to fill in the gaps when someone in the public eye doesn't share their personal life,” Washington said. “I understand their frustration. I like how people will post pictures of me with other women that I adore, hugging on red carpets, and say, 'See?' Are we so uncomfortable with love between two people of the same gender that we immediately label it as sexual? But I've never been bothered by the lesbian rumor. There's nothing offensive about it, so there's no reason to be offended.”
