A video featuring a 90-year-old grandmother wishing happiness for her gay grandson has gone viral in China.

In the 40-second video produced by Guangzhou-based PFLAG, a support group for the families and friends of LGBT people, and released to coincide with Chinese Valentine's Day, the grandmother is seen holding a placard that reads, “We urge the legalization of gay marriages.”

“I'm 90 years old,” the grandmother says. “My grandson, Mutou [not his real name], is gay. He is very dutiful and sensible. I love him dearly. I hope he finds a good boyfriend and lives a happy life. And I hope that the government supports him.” (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

According to the South China Morning Post, the video has become an Internet hit.

“This means she will have to deal with lots of pressure from strangers and relatives,” said Mutou, a 28-year-old engineer who came out to his family last year.

“She even tried to calm my parents – who were less accepting in the beginning – and asked them to take it easy. She did it out of simple love,” he added.
