Christian conservative Linda Harvey has condemned the marriage of a dying Ohio gay man, saying the couple is in a “fantasy” marriage.

The couple, James Obergefell and John Arthur of Cincinnati, married aboard a medical transport plane parked on the tarmac of a Baltimore airport. Arthur is dying from Lou Gehrig's Disease and would like to be buried in a family plot next to his husband. A federal judge has ordered Ohio officials to recognize the valid Maryland marriage. A temporary injunction allows Arthur to be listed as married on his death certificate, with Obergefell listed as his surviving spouse.

Harvey, the founder of the Columbus, Ohio-based Mission America and a frequent contributor to the conservative website WND.com, compared the couple's marriage to a fantasy of being a licensed surgeon.

“There is no discrimination or inequality, either of these men could be married to a woman,” Harvey said.

“Can marriage just be what anyone thinks it is? Here's a possible analogy. Sophie wants to be a doctor, she's never gone to medical school but in her mind she's qualified to treat patients, even perform surgery. But the law only allows the practice of medicine by those who have attended medical school, passed the state board exams and so on. But isn't this unequal protection? Aren't Sophie’s fantasies valid? She believes she should be allowed to practice medicine therefore the requirements to be a licensed MD are unconstitutional for her,” she said.
