Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), has dismissed a call to moderate the Republican Party's message on gay marriage.
When asked by a female reporter during an Iowa press conference discussing plans to boost the party's image, “How about moderating the message? [Former RNC Chair] Ken Mehlman was here several weeks ago saying it was time to moderate the party's message especially on same-sex marriage,” Priebus said he did not think that was necessary.
“You know, I don't think, listen I don't think our platform is the issue,” Priebus said. “I think a lot of times it's some of these biologically stupid things that people say that I believe caused a lot of the problems. I thought that the Democrats played an inside straight. They talked about a war on women that didn't exist. It was not working and then [Senator Todd] Aiken comes along and they draw a card on the river and suddenly they got a caricature that they are trying to prove nationwide.” (The video is embedded on this page. Priebus' remarks come as a new study shows that a majority of young Republicans (51%) support marriage equality.
