Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter called the legalization of gay marriage “discriminatory” in his remarks to colleagues before the Senate approved such a bill on Thursday and passed it to the House for further consideration.

McCarter, a Republican, repeated his remarks in a post-debate Facebook post: “To redefine marriage is discriminatory towards those who hold the sincerely held religious belief that it is a sacred institution between man & a woman.”
On the Senate floor, McCarter said passage of the measure would “jeopardize freedom rather than expanding it” because it would “take away the right of many.”
For a brief few hours on Thursday, McCarter's Wikipedia page labeled him a “bigot” for his remarks.
McCarter is “a bigot who opposes SB0010, a bill to allow equal marriage in the state of Illinois,” the online encyclopedia stated.
