Former Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank has said lawmakers have been mostly supportive of his marriage.
The 72-year-old Frank has the distinction of being the first openly gay member of Congress and the first to enter a marriage with a member of the same sex.
In an appearance on cabler Current's Say Anything, Frank told host Joy Behar that anti-gay sentiment in America is dying down.
“We have broken the back, I believe, of the prejudice,” he said. “We have a cleaning up operation to do.”
Part of the problem, Frank said, was “we were hiding who we were.”
“Six months ago, just about, I became ...”
“A married man,” Behar interrupted.
“... the first same-sex couple in the Congress and I was very pleased with the reaction.”
Frank added that he returned a wedding gift sent by a former female member of Congress who then voted for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
“And I got an apology,” he said. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)
