Gay glossy The Advocate has named Tacoma, Washington the “gayest city in America.”

The magazine said it used 9 criteria in reaching its decision: the number of out elected officials, the number of corporations scoring well on HRC's Corporate Equality Index, the number of concerts played since 2009 by the bands Scissor Sisters, Uh Huh Her, Girl in a Coma and the cast of Glee, trendy shopping, the number of municipalities with transgender protections, the number of gay rugby teams, the number of bisexual resource groups, the number of roller derby leagues and whether marriage is legal for gay and lesbian couples.

“Book a charming B&B, dine at the gay-owned Pacific Grill (PacificGrillTacoma.com), and dance the night away at The Mix (TheMixTacoma.com), and you've got a great recipe for a Northwest honeymoon,” the magazine wrote in announcing Tacoma the winner of its 4th annual survey. “The center of LGBT life in Tacoma is the St. Helen's District, where the nightlife is plentiful, with some venues rivaling nearby Seattle's. When the indoor fun is done, the environs offer stunning forests and oceans in fairy-tale settings. Consider visiting in July, when the weather is great and Tacoma celebrates pride at Out in the Park (OutInTacoma.com).”

Springfield, Massachusetts came in second.
