Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. has come out in support of gay marriage and President Barack Obama.
The 35-year-old Mayweather on Wednesday tweeted to his nearly 3 million followers: “I stand behind President Obama & support gay marriage. I'm an American citizen & I believe people should live their life the way they want.”
Mayweather, the current WBC Welterweight Champion, remains undefeated as a professional boxer.
His message arrives in the wake of the controversy surrounding boxer Manny Pacquiao's remarks on gay marriage.
The seven-division world champion Pacquiao, 33, created a flurry of controversy this week when he was asked his opinion on gay marriage and was misquoted as making a biblical reference that gay men must be put to death.
On Wednesday, Pacquiao denied the media reports and apologized to the gay community.
Followers gave Mayweather's message a mixed response.
“Say it isn't so Floyd …,” responded one follower.
“Thanks Floyd,” wrote another follower, “now work on that fight with Pac,” a reference to ongoing negotiations for a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.
