Gay themed movies Weekend and Beginners are among the year's most romantic films to win a Golden Tomato Award from film review site Rotten Tomatoes.

Topping the annual roundup of films in the romance category is Weekend, followed by Beginners in third place.

In Weekend, Russell (played by Tom Cullen) randomly picks up Glen (Chris New), a struggling artist, at a nightclub on a Friday. The pair unexpectedly spend most of the next 48 hours together – having sex, getting drunk and sharing stories. The weekend resonates throughout their lives. Now out on DVD, Beginners has Oliver (played by Ewan McGregor) telling the story of his father, Hal (Christopher Plummer), who comes out gay at the age 75. It is Plummer's first portrayal of a gay man.

Rotten Tomatoes determined the winners by adding up the number of positive reviews (“fresh,” not “rotten”) each film received from the site's top film critics.

Weekend was the freshest of the five films, coming in with a 95% rating.

Second place finisher Jane Eyre received an 85% rating to edge out Beginner's 84 percent.
