Broadway star Kyle Dean Massey will play an openly gay singer-songwriter on the ABC hit series Nashville.

Deadline Hollywood reported that Massey will join Nashville, now in its third season, in the recurring role of Kevin Bicks.

The 33-year-old Massey is openly gay.

In 2010, he recorded an It Gets Better video in which he said that he was a living example that it gets better for troubled LGBT youth.

“There were no gay people in my town [Jonesboro, Arkansas] at all,” he said in the video. “You were led to believe that it was like subversive or wrong or evil. … I was just made to believe that I was odd and weird.” (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

Massey's Broadway credits include stints in Wicked, Pippin and Next to Normal. Television roles include The Good Wife and Inside Amy Schumer.
