The Census Bureau released new data
last week that includes the spouses of gay and lesbian couples for
the first time.
According to Pew Research Center
calculations based on the bureau's 2013 American Community Survey,
the number of married adults over the age of 18 dropped to 50.3% from
50.5% in 2012.
Households headed by same-sex married
couples increased to nearly 252,000, a notable increase from 2012,
when the government estimated the figure at 182,000.
There are 56 million married couples in
the U.S.
The Census Bureau previously
reclassified two people of the same gender who said they were married
as cohabiting partners.
Meanwhile, a Pew
Research poll also released last week shows that most LGBT adults
believe that society has become more accepting of sexual minorities.
Still, a majority of LGBT adults say that they have been
discriminated against because of who they are.
