Lady Gaga's gay anthem Born This Way on Sunday won best video with a message during MTV's Video Music Awards.

Born This Way won the category's first-ever Moonman statue during a pre-show event.

The new category is devoted to videos with a social conscience. Before the winner was announced, Lady Gaga told MTV News that it was an “absolute honor” to be nominated.

“During the past year, we've seen a remarkable number of artists use their music to explore deeply personal experiences and issues they were passionate about to create powerful videos that resonate with and inspire millions of their fans,” MTV President Stephen Friedman said in a statement about the new category.

Also nominated were Rise Against's Make It Stop (September's Children), Taylor Swift's Mean, Eminem's Love The Way You Lie, Katy Perry's Firework, and Pink's Fuckin' Perfect.

Make It Stop (September's Children) has become the It Gets Better Project's official music video. In it, three kids decide to stick around after being bullied in school. At the end of the video, It Gets Better founder Dan Savage says, “Life gets better.”
