A video parody of Cee Lo Green's Fuck
You knocks Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox for backing
civil unions for gay and lesbian couples over marriage.
Fox, who is openly gay, decided to back
away from a marriage bill and push for civil unions after it became
clear that full marriage would not clear the Democrat-controlled
Senate.
Governor Lincoln Chafee signed the
civil unions bill into law, making Rhode Island the fifth state
behind Illinois, Hawaii, New Jersey and Delaware to offer the union.
After the bill's passage, Fox said he
was “unequivocally a full supporter of marriage equality” but
insisted civil unions are a “step in the right direction.”
The members of Bear Providence, led by
Jim Carroll, felt otherwise and put their emotions to a musical beat.
“I see you rolling downtown voting
gay marriage down and I'm like fuck you,” Carroll sings in the
5-minute video. “You said the votes that you needed just weren't
coming through and I'm like fuck you, and Paiva Weed too. If I was
richer I'd run against ya – You big piece of shit.” (The video
is embedded in the right panel of this page.)
Speaking
to Dan Yorke on WPRO Radio, Carroll explained that the video
expressed his sincere emotions.
“I had a lot of anger about the bill
not making it to the floor and I did not know what to do,” he said.
“Then I heard that Cee Lo Green song on the radio. It came from
my heart.”
In
response, Fox said he “understood the frustration expressed [in
the video] because they are disappointed.”
“I want to tell the community that I
hear them and I have not given up on the cause,” Fox added.
