The second season of Showtime's
lesbian-themed reality series The Real L Word: Los Angeles
begins Sunday night.
The show, which follows the lives of
seven lesbians living in Los Angeles, is the reality series version
of Ilene Chaiken's groundbreaking drama The L Word, which ran
for six seasons on Showtime and starred Jennifer Beals.
In its second outing, the show has shed
most of its original cast with the exception of Hollywood special
effects artist Whitney.
This year, Whitney attempts to give
back to the community as she romances Sara, ignoring the warnings of
her friends.
And there are six fresh faces added to
the mix: Los Angeles newcomer Claire, business executive Francine,
fashion designer Romi, looking-to-start-a-family couple Cori &
Kacy, and recently out LGBT activist Sajdah.
During a panel at the Television
Critics Association Winter Press Tour in January, David Nevins,
Showtime's president of entertainment, said the show's changes were
needed.
“I felt like there's life in that
idea,” Nevins said. “First of all, this network has had a long
relationship with gay and particularly lesbian audiences that I think
is important to protect.”
“I think there's an interesting
version of that show that we didn't quite get at last year.”
“So it definitely seemed worth doing
a second season,” he added. “I think everyone is sort of
sometimes, with those reality shows, you get it right year two.”
