Clinton “Billy” Lewis, a supporter
of gay rights and owner of a gay bar, was found dead of a gunshot
wound early Sunday, the
Star Gazette reported.
Police found Lewis' remains in his
home, which is located across the street from the gay bar and club he
owned, Chill, in small town Elmira, New York.
Lewis was pronounced dead at the Arnot
Ogden Medical Center a short time later.
The 53-year-old had helped organize
local gay pride events in the past.
“This is a shocking event. Bill was
a friend to so many,” said Tom Schreur, a business partner who owns
the building where Chill is located.
Friends of the deceased gathered
outside the bar on Sunday.
“He was a dear friend,” said Alexis
Franchi of Elmira. “He helped me out, and helped my little brother
out. He was a good guy. He opened his door to anyone who needed
help.”
Police divulged few details, but said
there was no evidence of a break-in. The paper reported that Lewis
did not live alone.
