Country music singer Chely Wright has
recorded a video for Cyndi
Lauper's Give a Damn campaign against homophobia.
The video is the latest from Lauper's
True Colors Fund.
“I'm a Christian, I am gay, and I
give a damn about equality,” the
newly engaged Wright says in the one-minute-thirty-four-second
video released late last week.
Wright, who came out lesbian last May,
also talks about coming to terms with her sexuality.
“Coming out to the world and my
family and friends was my path to freedom. And at the end of that, I
found my music, my spirituality, and I found myself,” she says.
“Today, so many young people continue
to face a world of uncertainty as they come to terms with their
sexual orientation or gender identity. They face rejection by their
family, by their friends. They face bullying in school and
condemnation by their faith. They hide their true selves from
everyone.”
It's time for a change, Wright says,
then adds, “I give a damn. Do you?”
Other openly gay celebrities who have
recorded similar videos for the campaign include singers Elton John
and Ricky Martin, comedian Wanda Sykes and actress Meredith Baxter.
