Singer Ricky Martin is headed to
Broadway to star as Che in the Broadway revival of 'Evita,'
all-things-Broadway
website Playbill.com reported.
The new production marks the first
return of the Perons to the Broadway stage since Evita's 1979
Tony Award-winning New York debut starring Broadway diva Patti LuPone
as Eva Peron.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice
production is based on Eva's dramatic rise from poor schoolgirl to
first lady of Argentina. Argentine actress Elena Roger will star as
Evita.
The production – which opened at
London's Adelphi Theater in 2006 – arrives on Broadway in spring
2012. Argentine actress Elena Rogers will continue in the role of
Eva Peron.
Martin follows in the steps of Mandy
Patinkin, who played Che in the original Broadway musical.
The 39-year-old pop star and father of
twin boys Valentino and Matteo came out gay in March. He talked
about his reluctance to discuss his sexual orientation in his memoir
Me.
Martin's
first music video for the single The
Best Thing About Me Is You
from his forthcoming album Music
+ Soul + Sex
includes gay and lesbian couples in affectionate poses.
