Julianna Margulies, the star of the CBS
legal drama The Good Wife, says she “loves” Dallas
Roberts' gay role.
On the show, Margulies' Alicia Florrick
and her gay brother, Owen, confide in each other. Owen is going
through a difficult period after he cheated on his boyfriend.
During a Television Critics Association
Winter Tour panel for The Good Wife, Margulies was asked about
the show's gay “presence,” gay
entertainment website AfterElton.com reported.
“I don't feel like it's a presence,”
Margulies answered. “I feel like it's part of life. I think
that's why it works. The way Dallas Roberts plays his character
isn't screaming 'Hi, I'm homosexual. Hi, I'm a straight man.' It's
not screaming anything except, 'This is my brother and he's having
relationship problems.' That's what I love about it.”
Margulies added that the gay character
isn't there to “make people happy.”
“I feel like the way it's been
incorporated on the show really fits in with modern times and what
we're dealing with on the show and what we're all dealing with
anyway. Just as my character is dealing with the fact that her
husband slept with hookers, it's the same way my brother's character
is feeling he screwed up his relationship because he cheated and
that's what I love about it,” she added.
In the show's latest episode, Owen
has a frank conversation with Jackie Florrick about whether being gay
is a choice.
