New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has
reached out to troubled gay teens, saying New York City wants them.
“I have a message for you, New York
City wants you,” Bloomberg says in his one-minute-six-second It
Gets Better video. “New York has always been the place where
anyone can go and be who they are supposed to be regardless of
ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual identity.”
“We need you. We need your
enthusiasm, your ideas, your passion, and your talents.” (The
video is embedded in the right panel of this page.)
The
It Gets Better Project encourages troubled gay teens to hang in
there and not cave in to bullies, because life gets better. The
project was the idea of sex advice columnist (Savage Love) and
gay rights activist Dan Savage.
Other lawmakers who have created a
video include President
Barack Obama, Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton, Britain's
Conservative Party leader David Cameron and Speaker
of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Bloomberg
previously recorded a video urging New Yorkers to back gay marriage.
