Jesse Tyler Ferguson, the star of ABC's Wednesday night comedy Modern Family, says the show is a Republican Trojan horse.

Ferguson made his comments on HLN's Joy Behar Show as he and his host discussed a recent study that shows the comedy to be a favorite among Republicans.

On the show, Ferguson, who is openly gay, plays Mitchell, half of a gay couple who are raising an adopted daughter. His boyfriend, Cameron, is played by Eric Stonestreet.

“We definitely focus a lot on family values and the core family and bringing up kids in a great way,” Ferguson said. “It just happens that there's this gay couple.”

“It actually relieves me that Republicans love our show so much,” he added. “We call it the Trojan horse. We kind of sneak it in there sometimes and they don't realize they're enjoying this.”

Talking about his co-star, Ferguson said Stonestreet is “gay for pay,” while he's “gay for free.” (The video is embedded in the right panel of this page.)
