Possibly hundreds of students chanted
an anti-gay cheer during a Thursday night football game, Cleveland's
Fox 8 News reported.
Students from North High School in
Eastlake, Ohio are seen in a YouTube clip chanting “Powder Blue
Faggots” at the team from rival Willoughby South. The schools are
located in suburbs of Cleveland. (The video is embedded in the right
panel of this page.)
“I sat there for a little bit
thinking it would stop, and it happened again, and it happened three
times,” Heather Ike, a former North High student who took the
video, said.
Jan Cline, executive director of the
Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Greater
Cleveland, said she wasn't surprised by the incident.
“It's another incident of hate
speech,” she said.
The school's principal, Jennifer
Chauby, said she, with the aid of the assistant principles, did stop
the chanting.
“We did put a stop to it as soon as
we heard them chanting it, and it's totally unacceptable and they
know we don't condone that type of behavior,” she said.
Chauby estimates that as many as 300
students were involved in the incident, too many to discipline.
Instead, she'll talk to the school.
