A Gainesville, Florida church will
protest the city's openly gay mayor Craig Lowe.
The Dove
World Outreach Center announced its August 2 No
Homo Mayor
protest on its blog with this post: “What is homosexuality?
Detestable, indecent, wicked, offensive, perverted, shameful,
unnatural, degrading, impure, futile, foolish, godless, dishonorable,
a lie.”
Voters narrowly approved of Lowe, who
had previously served as a city commissioner, on April 13.
The church campaigned against Lowe's
bid for mayor by erecting a sign on its property that read “No Homo
Mayor” and producing several videos attacking Lowe. The videos
were uploaded to YouTube and posted on the church's blog.
“Here in Gainesville, they're getting
ready to have a runoff election between two candidates and one of
them is openly a homo, gay, fag – whatever you want to call him, I
don't care,” Pastor Wayne Sapp says in one of the videos. “Bottom
line is we cannot afford a homo mayor.”
“We got one running for mayor of
Gainesville, trying to convert Gainesville into Homoville,” Sapp
adds. “We can't have it.”
The church's No Homo Mayor
protest is scheduled for noon on August 2 at Gainesville City Hall.
