Singer Ricky Martin has congratulated
Argentina on becoming the first Latin American country to legalize
gay marriage.
The pop star praised
Thursday's early morning passage of a gay marriage bill on the
micro-blogging site Twitter.
“Argentina, nation that is pensive,
tolerant and just has made history by saying YES to gay marriage!”
he wrote in Spanish. “Example for the rest of Latin America!
Congratulations!”
The 38-year-old Martin had also urged
lawmakers to approve the law in a Wednesday tweet to over 1 million
followers: “Let's go Argentina! The same rights with the same name
for everyone.”
The Livin' La Vida Loca star
came out gay in a March blog post on his fan website, ending nearly a
decade of speculation on the Puerto Rican entertainer's sexual
orientation.
Last month he opened up about his love
life, telling People en Espanol that his boyfriend is a
childhood friend with whom he became reacquainted with over a year ago in
Miami. Martin said the investment analyst helps with raising his
children, twin boys Valentino and Matteo.
