Nineteen-year-old Stephen Powell is
dead after being shot late Saturday night during a San Francisco gay
pride event, the AP reported.
Powell was among the three people hit
by gunfire at about 11:30PM in the city's predominantly-gay Castro
district as Pink Saturday kicked off the city's 40th
annual gay pride weekend.
Powell was the most seriously injured
during the shooting spree. He was transported to a hospital where he
died. The San Francisco medical examiner's office announced Powell's
death Sunday but has yet to determine a cause of death.
The other two people – a 27-year-old
male and a 19-year-old female – were both shot in the leg.
Police say they took a 19-year-old male
into custody and recovered the handgun allegedly used in the
shooting.
An
unidentified eyewitness called the scene “mayhem.” Police
say the shooting was not connected to the festivities.
Thousands are expected to attend the
city's 40th annual gay pride parade Sunday. House Speaker
Nancy Pelosi is expected to address the crowd in a recorded message.
