Cynthia Nixon says she's disappointed
with President Barack Obama's slow go on gay rights, particularly on
the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the law that defines marriage as
a heterosexual union for federal agencies.
Nixon and her girlfriend, New York
education activist Christine Marinoni, spoke to USA Today's
Ann Oldenburg during a cocktail party before the pair attended
Saturday's White House Correspondents Association dinner.
The Sex in the City 2 star
applauded Obama for supporting repeal of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell,”
the law that forbids gay troops from serving openly, but then added,
“I feel like it's so time for the Defense of Marriage Act to go
away. He really made that a campaign pledge, but it hasn't
happened.”
Nixon and Marinoni announced their
engagement last year as New York lawmakers geared up to debate a gay
marriage bill. The couple campaigned heavily for passage of the
bill, appearing often at rallies and demonstrations. Senators,
however, rejected the bill, leaving the women unable to marry in the
Empire State.
Nixon suggested they'd get married in
Iowa: “I feel like it would underscore the fact that New York
hasn't come through. Iowa! We had to go to Iowa, you losers in the
Senate.”
Marinoni, however, nixed the idea: “I
think we'd both like to get married in New York.”
