Rocker Cyndi Lauper has taken her gay
advocacy to NBC's Celebrity Apprentice.
The 56-year-old Grammy-winning singer
is playing Donald Trump's Apprentice for her LGBT charity,
True Colors
Fund of Stonewall Community Foundation.
“As a longtime and outspoken advocate
for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality, I felt
the need to do something bold to bring everyone together to celebrate
the LGBT community,” Lauper says on the group's website.
“Over the past few decades, the LGBT
community has made tremendous strides, but so much more work still
needs to be done. We just need to look to the recent passage of Prop
8 in California or the hate crimes that still occur all too often to
know that this is the truth.”
“But, what I also know to be the
truth is that if we all stand together in solidarity we can overcome
the obstacles still in front of us,” she adds.
Working with the True Colors Tour, the
charity has raised over $200,000 over the past 2 years for gay rights
groups such as the Human
Rights Campaign, CenterLink
and PFLAG,
the support group for parents and friends of gay men and lesbians.
