An Amarillo, Texas pastor is calling
for a boycott against the city of Houston because voters elected an
openly lesbian mayor.
Annise Parker was installed as mayor of
the nation's fourth largest city on January 2, 2010 after besting her Democratic rival. Social
conservatives who opposed her election made plenty of hay over her
sexual orientation during the campaign.
Parker is now the inspiration behind a
boycott of Houston.
“Do you want a Texas version of San
Francisco? Neither do we!” boycott organizer David H. Grisham says
at BoycottHouston.com.
Grisham also objects to a proposed
Planned Parenthood expansion: “Houston has elected an openly
homosexual mayor and built the largest abortion clinic in the United
States and you can do something about it!”
That something is imposing “economic
sanctions” against the city. Grisham's boycott suggestions
include: people not travel to or spend money in Houston, avoid the
city's airport, move out of the city, reject Houston's sports teams
and not open or expand businesses in the city.
Grisham is also behind Repent
Amarillo, a self described “repentance-based ministry.”
Parker, 53, entered politics in 1997 as
the city's first openly gay city council member. In 2003, she moved
on to city controller. Parker and her partner, Kathy Hubbard, are
raising two adopted daughters and have also raised a foster son, who
is now 32.
“Are you tired of babies being
murdered and the radical homosexual agenda being shoved down the
throat of normal society. Texas is a Christian state!” Grisham
says at BoycottHouston.com.
“Don't mess with Texas or Texas
children,” he adds.
