Gwyneth Paltrow will star in the big screen adaptation of the story of the first person to undergo sex reassignment surgery, replacing Charlize Theron, Variety reported.

The movie is being adapted from the novel The Danish Girl, a fictionalized account of Danish artist Einar Wagener's metamorphosis by freshman novelist David Ebershoff.

Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Moulin Rouge!) is set to play Einar, while Paltrow (Iron Man 2) will play the role of Greta Wagener, Einar's wife.

Einar first became consumed with the idea of altering his sex after Greta asked him to stand in for a female model she was set to paint. He posed for a number of paintings, which became wildly popular in 1920's Copenhagen. Greta's game of dressing her husband as Lili ultimately led him to his historic 1931 operation. The transformation shocked the world and threatened the couple's marriage.

Kidman played a lesbian character in the 2002 film The Hours.
