The much-hyped gay-inclusive celebrity
edition of The Newlywed Game airs on Monday on the GSN cable
network.
The episode features recently married
Hollywood gay celebrity couple George Takei and Brad Altman.
Takei, who played Mr. Sulu on the
original television series Star Trek, and Altman married in
September after a 21-year engagement. The couple traded vows last
September in Los Angeles during the June-to-November “summer of
love” during which gay and lesbian couples were allowed to legally
marry in California. Voters approved a gay marriage ban in November,
but couples who tied the knot before its passage remain legally
married.
“What we want is to display the
normality and the joy of having a happy union,” Takei told the AP.
Newlywed premiered in 1966 with
host Bob Eubanks asking newly-married couples revealing questions
about their relationships. Eubanks turned “making whoopee” into
his signature catch-phrase during his long tenure on the show.
Singer Carnie Wilson took over hosting
duties for the show when it returned last year. She says she has
been pushing for an all-gay edition of the show.
