HBO will broadcast director Kirby
Dick's controversial documentary on the outing of gay and lesbian
politicians on October 5.
Outrage looks at the lives of
gay politicians – past and present – who remain deep in the
closet and actively support an anti-gay agenda and the damage they
have inflicted on the gay and lesbian community.
The film premiered in April at New
York's Tribeca Film Festival.
The movie created controversy with the
outing of Florida Governor Charlie Crist. Rumors that Crist is gay
have long swirled in gay political circles. Crist might have hoped
that his 2008 marriage to Carole Rome would have put those rumors to
bed. Instead, the gossip turned cynical as muckrakers dismissed the
marriage as a sham and little more than conservative window dressing
to help secure a spot on the 2008 Republican presidential ticket.
Crist is currently campaigning to
become Florida's next senator in 2010.
Producers of the film call it: “[A]
searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians who
actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to.
Boldly revealing the hidden lives of some of the United States' most
powerful policymakers, Outrage takes a comprehensive look at
the harm they've inflicted [by] keeping their secrets.”
