A Tumblr page claiming responsibility
for a bombing that injured 29 people Saturday night in the New York
City neighborhood of Chelsea said that the bombs were a protest
against LGBT oppression.
The blog, titled I'm the NY Bomber.
This will be my manifesto, threatened more violence to follow.
“You probably have all seen the news
by now, the explosives detonated in New York City, that was me,”
the blog's first post reads.
“I don't know exactly how I feel
about taking human lives,” a
second post reads. “However, what I do know is that if I don't
do what needs to be done nobody will pay attention. LGBTQ+ people
are much more likely to commit suicide than straight cisgendered
people. It seems that nobody cares, however what if people from the
LGBTQ+ community started lashing out in response to the violence and
oppression we face with violence and possibly oppression? I'm sure
that would give people a reason to not stand by while so many people
are being oppressed. I suppose I'm just going to have to move
forward knowing that what I am doing had a purpose and will in fact
make a difference. I'll keep you all posted.”
An unnamed law enforcement official
told the AP that federal investigators have dismissed the blog's
claims of responsibility.
After a bomb exploded outside the
Associated Blind Housing facility at 135 West 23rd Street,
a second device was found four blocks away. Police used a robot to
remove it. Hours earlier, a bomb in New Jersey exploded.
Investigators believe all three incidents are connected.
Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the
attack appeared to be domestic terrorism.
