Retail giant Target announced Wednesday
that it would spend $20 million to install single-stall bathrooms in
all its stores.
Earlier this year, conservatives
launched a boycott of Target over its policy of allowing transgender
customers and employees to use the bathroom of their choice.
Target's move came in response to a North Carolina law that limits
transgender bathroom use in public buildings.
“Some of our guests clearly are
uncomfortable with our policy, and some are really supportive,”
Cathy Smith, Target's chief financial officer, told
reporters during a conference call.
Smith said that the boycott had not
affected sales.
“It's difficult to tease out one
thing that's driving results,” she said, adding that the issue has
“really not been material.”
Single-stall bathrooms are already an
option at most Target stores.
